Wondering

In English we use "I was wondering.." a lot it's a polite way of saying things in an indirect way that you use even with your closest friends for example:

"I was wondering if you could look after my kids on Friday?"

"I was wondering if you would like to do something this weekend."

A Spanish friend of mine has said that in Spanish you don't use "I was wondering" so much because Spanish is a lot more direct. Is this true?

How would you translate this sentence?

"I just rang because I'm in town and was wondering if you'd like to get a coffee?"

"Me gustaría saber si..." is another polite option.

"Me gustaría saber si vas a asistir a la fiesta"
"I was wondering if you are comin' to the party."

Best regards!!!
Saludos!!!

Otra posibilidad :
