Así, así

Hello,

In my spanish classes. We've learned that "Así,Así" Means "So,So" Normally I would not question my teacher, but I have a spanish speaking friend who says they would never answer with it. When asked Como Estas, We are taught to reply Asi,Asi if we are not great, but not bad... We're just so, so. Is this right? Or is there another way to say it?

Your Spanish-speaking friend is right (tiene razón)!
Many Spanish teachers in America teach that "así, así" means "so, so." That's not exactly correct. You can respond, "No tan mal," "Regular," "Ni mal, ni bien," or "Más o menos."
When what you're eating isn't all that great, then you can say that it's "así, así," and use an appropriate gester.

It might be used in the States, in some "barrio".

I agree with Rusty. The most common way to say it in Mexico would be "más o menos".

Ookami reminded me that we also use this one in informal speech to say the same:

-- Ahí [a'i] la llevo.
