Cobija

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for September 3, 2008

cobija - feminine noun (la) - blanket. Look up cobija in the dictionary

Tápate bien con tu cobija para que no te dé frío en la noche.
Cover yourself up with your blanket so you don't get cold at night.

That is an acceptable construction, and many will understand it, but there is an imperative form. David showed you the other translations of the phrase.

Deme la cobija, por favor. = Give me the blanket, please. (formal command)
Por favor, deme la cobija.
Dame la cobija, por favor. = Give me the blanket, please. (familiar command)
Por favor, dame la cobija.

I use "manta". I use "cobijar" as a verb, but I don not use "cobija".

Es bueno saberlo. En México según yo sé, manta sólo se refiere a un tipo de tela.

Puede ser por donde vives. Quizá la gente hispanohablante de Nueva York no esté contenta con una mera cobija. Una colcha es más gruesa. Mi diccionario dice que es bedspread o quilt.
