Había que seguir río abajo
Creo que esto es una manera de decir "había que mantener agua debajo del barco". ¿Es común o poética?

No significa eso. Había que seguir la dirección del río; mejor dicho, el sentido del río. Los ríos nunca suben.

It means one has to follow the course of the river... "We/they had to keep rowing/sailing/navigating/(whatever) down the river"
It is a common expression for this kind of activities, but it can also be used in a figurative sense, of course. Edit: Irma beat me to answer... but when one says "río arriba", it means one has to go up the river, against its natural course.
