"de haber sido"?

In the passage below, I'm a bit confused by the use of "de" in the bold phrase. It seems to mean "if [it] had been", but then why "de" instead of "si"? Can "de" be used to mean "if" or am I missing something?


"La apática conversación se prolongó durante toda la comida, y de haber sido presenciada por un testigo que pudiera después darnos parte de ella, afirmaría que las preguntas nacían desde el desinterés más absoluto y que las respuestas tenían como objetivo no resultar descortés. El supuesto testigo apostaría hasta la última moneda de su bolsillo porque algo horroroso y despiadado amenazaba a la familia Losada, la cual era consciente de ello, pero no se atrevía a compartir."
