Julio Iglesias
When I was 15 and I went to Scotland for the first time, the first thing people said when I said I was Spanish was: Ah! Julio Iglesias and that was the end of it.
Now people in England often say: Rafael Nadal... What would people think of in the States when introduced to a Spaniard?

Better to think of both things. The States? A peanut butter sandwich while watching a George Clooney video...

Yo, al igual que David, pensaría en Paella, tambien en las Corridas de Toros, Sangría, etc.

I would also be thinking of los toros y los matadores.

I like your avatar.
In Spanish we usually say torero for bullfighter. But in English you can also say matador.
