Las protestas en Venezuela derivan en un derramamiento de sangre
This confuses me. I think it means : I think it means that the protests in Venezuela turned into a blood bath, but it doen't read that way. Can derivar en mean to become?

Just another additional usage (From Oxford) b (cambiar de dirección) derivar HACIA/EN algo: una charla que derivó en discusión = a chat which degenerated into o turned into o became an argument; nuestra amistad derivaba hacia el odio = our friendship was turning to hatred
