Fill in the blank?

Hey guys, could you please proofread my answers and tell me if they're right? Thanks! The words in bold are my inserted answers.

Gracias!

I've marked what I think needs to be corrected. I believe that your other choices are correct. See if you can figure out why the marked items are wrong, and try to correct it. Let us know what you figure out.

Mmmm... being a Spanish native I cannot figure out why you marked "iban" as incorrect...

(Reads totally fine to me...)

In my opinion, the logical answer would be los iba a llevar, if we understand that Mr. Dupont IS going to take them, although this information is not implicit in the text, so iban is possible too. As for the choice of the imperfect, I would say it's ok.

Thank you Cogu, that makes sense.

I would say "[él] les iba a llevar (a ellos)"

When I say "los iban a llevar" I understand it in a more impersonal way, i.e., would not necessarily be Monsieur Dupont personally the one hosting them...

JPablo, Cogu guessed my reasoning exactly: my first instinct was that Mr. Dupont was supposed to be the subject of "los iban a llever".

Your interpretation is perfectly valid, too, of course. However, as nothing else in the text mentions any other person besides the Burkes and Mr. Dupont, and in the text Mr. Dupont invited the Burkes to visit him (no mention of family, wife or friends), for the purpose of a fill-in-the-blank exercise I would expect a preference for "iba" rather than "iban".

Thank you, you are right.
In the context is much better with "iba".
