Quise darme cuenta

tengo una pregunta..

escuché una cancíon dónde el cantante dijo "cuando quise darme cuenta ya era tarde"

¿"quise darme cuenta" y "me di cuenta" son iguales?

No, no son iguales.

Wanting to realize something paints a different picture than realizing something.

It was the wanting that came too late.
"I wanted to realize" isn't the same as "I realized."

Se parecen, pero no tanto. (Tú pregunta es sutil, y denota buen oído para las finuras del lenguaje: enhorabuena).
La diferencia es de orden psicológico, diría yo. Ambas frases denotan un mismo hecho: somebody realizes something, that is: gets to know or acknowledges something.

Pero la frase con "quise" parece denotar una cierta resistencia previa a reconocer un hecho:

No me di cuenta: algo pasó, se hizo evidente, pero no lo vi ni lo entendí, y no precisamente por culpa mía.

No quise darme cuenta: aquí el hablante se "siente culpable" de no haber visto lo que era ya evidente. Reconoce que es responsable de no haber notado lo que estaba ocurriendo.

Ese verbo "querer" introduce un claro elemento de subjetividad, que en el primer ejemplo no existe con tanta fuerza.
