Polite intensifiers

Estoy traduciendo un artículo de una revista para mi iglesia, y no sé cómo traducir "What on earth...?" Normalmente diría "¿Qué diablos ...?" pero dado el contexto no me parece adecuado. "¿Qué co*o ...?" mucho menos.

¿Hay alguna forma de muy buena educación que podría emplear?
