Eye-opener

For example:

"I read the book on language acquisition and it was really an eye-opener. I didn't realize there was so much theory concerning how people learn/acquire language".

So...

It was an eye-opener... = Me abrio los ojos..

Can anyone thing of alternate/better ways of saying this?

irmamar is on a distinguished road
"Abrir los ojos" is a good option. Other ones: revelar (un libro revelador), hacer que uno se de cuenta, desvelar, señalar, hacer notar, etc.
