We use the term kitty (or pot or ante) in card games (like poker). The money contributed to the pot (kitty) is yours if you win the hand. We can also use kitty to describe any money that is contributed by a group of people which is set aside for a particular purpose. We also call this a pool (or a pot).
A group of people chip in (pool, contribute towards, throws in the pot) to purchase a costly item for another. When the hope is to win the contributed amount, however, we tend to call it a pool, a pot or a kitty (not necessarily in that order). |

Following on Rusty's comments about "kitty": I know of one other related use in the context of playing a specific card game that I know as "cribbage". This game involves dealing a specified number of cards to each player, then having each player remove a specified number of cards from their hand; all of the removed cards are collected and set aside as a group, and that collection of cards is called "the kitty". Card play starts after all players make their contribution of cards to the kitty.
At the end of the round, the dealer for that round has the privilege of retrieving the kitty and evaluating the cards for combinations that grant additional points toward achieving a winning score. The concept of "everyone contributes, one person benefits" is the defining feature that relates the use of "kitty" as monetary contributions to the use of "kitty" in this card game. |

What you call the kitty, we call the crib, in the game of cribbage.
