Para/por abajo

¿Cual es la diferencia entre "para abajo," "por abajo, y solo "abajo" (y no solo "abajo", pero también "arriba, alli", etc)?

Perdónenme si esto se ha preguntado antes. No pude encontrar nada sobre el tema.

Para abajo/arriba = destinación

Por abajo/arriba = ruta, camino

Abajo/arriba = lugar

El adverbio solo, indica un lugar. Con las preposiciones se indica una dirección.
"Para" puede usarse como sinónimo de "hacia" y "por" denota un lugar de tránsito.

·El elevador va para/hacia abajo/arriba. -> The elevator goes down.
·El nudo debe estar por abajo del botón. -> The knot must be underneath the button.

Todavía tengo dudas. ¿Entonces "por abajo de" y "abajo de" son iguales?

1) El túnel esta (por) abajo de la cuidad.
2) El túnel va (por) abajo de la cuidad.

Si yo tuviera que adivinar, diría que 1 no necesita "por" y 2 si la necesita. ¿Correcto?

Y no te olvides de que puedes usar 'debajo de'.
El túnel está debajo de la ciudad.
