I thank for not being one of the power wheels, but one of the creatures that are squashed by them.

Better?

I´m greatful for not being one of the wheels, but rather one of the creatures that are sqaushed by them.

Because it has a political connotation. The person who talks is glad not to be a part of the people in power (as if the power rode on wheels, like a car), but rather one oppressed by them.

Right. In this case would the wheels of power are "the powers that be"
