Could it be cambio de tercio? This means 'switch gears' or 'change the subject'.

Agree with "cambio de tercio". It means, as stated, 'switch gears' or 'change the subject'.
It has a bullfighting origin. In bullfighting, you have three different phases/steps ("tercios):
first: to make the bull weaker with a horse
second: To make fiercer the bull with the "banderillas"
Third: The "torero" moves the bull and kills him .
So if you "cambias de tercio" it means you change subject
from Wikipedia, but shortenedhttp://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corrida_de_toros
Quote:

Thank you Sosia. I thought it may have meant changing to third gear while driving.
Ahora veo que es un modismo taurino.

You don't hear that in Chile. I am not sure in countries that have/had bullfighting in LA.
