What does "Por qué no me casaría" refer to: the past, i.e. "¿Por qué no me casé" or the present/future, i.e. it would be a good idea to marry...?

Thank you.

It doesn't sound right to me. I expect it to say "¿Por qué no me habré casado con...?" instead.

I feel it may be mimicking the original English, but maybe it's a regional thing, as I know it is the case with speakers from NE Spain using conditional instead of subjunctive and other periphrasis because of the influence of Basque.

Thank you, aleCcowaN.

Here is what the book says about the author:

So it is probably the influence of the Galician language I think.

And "Por qué no me casaría" should refer to the past in the above context, have I understood you correctly?

Yes, the hypotetical action is in the past with equally hypotetical consequences in the present, the same as with "me habré casado", where the future points to the hypotetical, and the compound tense points to the past.

Regarding the influence of Galician, I know that its past simple takes the same form as Spanish imperfecto del subjuntivo:

Eu marchara = Yo me fuí

so sentences like "si me hubiera casado" might be the origin of some problem, no sure about that.

What I can tell is that "por qué no me casaría" sounds bad to my ear, but I must admit it sounds now better than it did when I first read about it.
