Superlative question
I have always though that the youngest was expressed as el/la más joven, but I have been told very recently that an irregular el/la menor is the correct term to use when describing the age of people with superlatives.

It's just like the comparative right? you can't use más joven, you have to use mayor, which is used for younger. I think it's the same for the superlative
so I believe it's el/la menor |

la menor, el menor
= la más joven, el más joven ~~~ la mayor, el mayor = la más vieja, el más viejo |

Where I live in Mexico they also use grande a lot in referring to age. Mi hermano más grande.

Yes, as Tacuba said before, we used the word El mayor or El menor or whatever, it permitted used in my country for example, you can use the word You are the bigger of my family, Tu eres el mas grande de mi familia, you are the smaller of my family, Tu eres el mas chico de mi familia.
Greetings.

Very true. But even in Mexico, when the meaning can be ambiguous, (size or age), then they are more specific and either use mayor/menor or they say "más grande de edad".
