Basically this means that watching TV, going to the movies,etc... is useless. Whenever you have sthg more important to do.
Is there an aquivalent in English?

I cannot think of an English equivalent. Some that are related are:
Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today.
To fiddle while Rome is burning.

Just as you said, it's a perfect description of the power of TV to draw people's attention away from more important things, to where they let themselves get carried away or bogged down in trivialities and get their priorities wrong. Wish I could think of an equivalent in English...
