No, "de tal palo, tal astilla" is like "The father is a good person, and so are they children" or "The SONY cameras are good, the new SONY cameras are also good"

Ejemplo:
- Mira que bien juega a fútbol Juan
- Que no te extrañe. Es hijo del famoso delantero XXX
- Ah, claro. De tal palo, tal astilla.

"like father, like son" works pretty good for "de tal palo, tal astilla", although I probably prefer poli's suggestion.
