Con permiso???

I am listening through some videos that someone here at Tomisimo introduced me to at the website for the University of Texas at Laredo. For each video, someone from a Spanish speaking country talks for a minute or two, and what they say is also shown as text in Spanish next to the video. It has done WONDERS for my listening skills!!

Anyway - I was just listening to one of the videos and the transcript of what the woman said follows:
I have a question about why one would say "con permiso" when visiting someone's home. I know you say "con permiso" when you need someone to move out of your way (right?), but I don't understand it in context here. Help.......

This is one of the ways to show, in an expected, polite way, that you're on your way out. You are asking permission to leave. This can be an awkward time, because no host wants their guests to leave and they can get very offended if you don't ask right.

Really!? Wow - we American's don't necessarily understand the heart of hospitality. That's really interesting. Thanks, Rusty!!

It's like saying "will you excuse me".
