What's the difference between feather and plume? I wanted to define the word "panache" and my dictionary says: "a feathered plume on a helmet" (but feathered plume sounds like a redundancy to me).

A plume on a helmet could also be made of horsehair or other materials.

To me though, panache means a way of doing something.

to do something with panache = hacer algo con garbo

A plume can be made of feathers or hair.

I've seen that "plume" means "feather", too. That puzzled me.

Latin pluma a small soft feather. A plume was originally an ornamental feather, then became an ornament looking like one. You can also have a plume of smoke rising from a fire
