Can someone explain this phrase?

It means to damage your own image or whatever.

Hacer cualquier cosa que te perjudique, aunque siempre había oído "piedras" en lugar de "tierra" y "tirar", en lugar de "echar".

tirar piedras sobre (o contra) el propio tejado Obrar causándose daño uno mismo.

Acabo de recordar un dicho en inglés más semejante:

También se dice aquí "cavar su propia tumba". Aunque yo lo veo más como meterse en aprietos.

"Venderse barato" también se dice, pero tiene otro significado. Más bien sería subestimarse, pero no tiene por qué llevar la connotación de un perjuicio a sí mismo sino, más bien, no sacar el provecho que sería de esperar. "Venderse caro", en el sentido de poner muchas dificultades, también se utiliza.

Don't put yourself down(or don't knock yourself). There will be plenty of others who will do that for you.
