Perro o perra

Perro o perra

Hola,

Estoy escribiendo un redacción para mi clase de español. Tiene que ser una anéctoda de mi niñez y estoy escribiendo sobre la vez cuando encontré mi perro, que es una hembra.

Debo referirme a ella como un perro o una perra? Porque siempre veo "perro" y en inglés usualmente es sólo "dog."

Cuando se desconoce el sexo se emplea el genérico masculino "perro"; sin embargo, como descubriste que era hembra y además te la quedaste, pues debes decir "perra". Si sientes que en inglés necesitas agregar un "she" o "female" , busca una forma femenina en español (a veces incluso cuando no lo sientas); suele haberlas para animales conocidos. Eso sí, por cuestión etimológica, ni todos son regulares ni todos resultan posibles.

Comenté hace poco en otro foro que, cuando llegaron a España los primeros libros de fantasía épica escritos en inglés con sus diferentes criaturas fantásticas. Algunas editoriales no se ponían de acuerdo sobre si declinar o no dichos sustantivos, Así pues, ciertos traductores cometían el desatino de referirse a una mujer de raza élfica como "mujer elfo" casi continuamente, al igual que escribían "dragón hembra" cada vez. Llegé a preguntarse si de verdad eran humanos y no máquinas quienes se atreviaron a tal despropósito. Finalmente y a día de hoy, se utiliza "elfa" y "dragona".

I agree with Julvenzor, although I'll add a small cultural note:

Just like in English, the word "perra" may be used as an insult, so there are oversensitive people who tend to avoid using the word, and turn to the diminutive "perrita" instead, even if it's an adult great dane.

Along with AdA's comment: English-speaking dog breeders typically use 'dog' only to refer to males; to refer to females they always use "bitch".

Of course, that word has become so strongly associated with offensive meanings that most of us native speakers never use it with its original meaning anymore, and when we hear it used with its original meaning it may take us a bit to get past the shock of hearing it and arrive at the intended inoffensive meaning.

Un poco fuera de tema, pero suena mejor usar "ocación" o "momento" en lugar de "vez" en este caso.

Gracias, lo que hice fue usar "perro" hasta el momento en la historia cuando supe que ella era una hembra, y dije "Descubrimos que no era perro sino perra." Después siempre usaba "ella" o "la."

Y gracias también a Tomísimo por tu consejo.
