Is it correct using "composed by"? The sentence is: Units composed by ranks.

Yes, I'd say 'arranged by rank' or 'composed of ranks' but you're right 'composed by ranks' wouldn't work.

No, both phrases could work but they do really have a slightly different meaning, 'arranged by means that the units are put in a certain order by rank, 'composed of' means that the units are made up of different ranks, different ranks are what make a unit.
For some reason 'arranged by' seems more natural to me but I guess either could work depending on the rest of the context. |
