Gorro/Gorra

How do you decide between gorro and gorra? Some of the explanations that I have found:

gorro - hat for men
gorra - hat for women

gorro - hat
gorra - cap

As a general reply:

· If it has a brim, it's a hat.
But: If the brim is not firm, like in some hats made of cloth, it can be called "gorro".

· If it has a visor ("visera") or has some sort of firm structure, it's a "gorra".
But: Military, religious or other specific styles may have a specific name, like "boina", "bonete", etc.

· If it's knitted or made of cloth, plastic, or any soft material that has no structure to keep its shape, it's a "gorro".
Having said all this, many speakers may use indistinctively "gorro" and "gorra" for these last items.

Thank you for taking the time to explain and for the visual, also. Interesting to know that our never-to-be-needed-in-Mexico toques are gorros.

Don't bet on that, there are regions that get really cold in winter.
