A mi me suena mejor: decían tonterías.

The boy was stubbornly asking for a videogame. You are so stubborn; I have already told you that you can't jump out of the window. He/she insisted in selling the house and now he/she has no place to sleep.

For a child it will be a little too "strong". It's like calling him "necio". I will use it with adult people. For children "tonterias" will be ok, as others said. I like to use the word "naderias" or "nimiedades" too, but it's something personal. If i have to use the ones we use here all the time, I will have to put some badwords ... :P
"No para de decir nimiedades." necedad. 1. f. Cualidad de necio. 2. f. Dicho o hecho necio.
