Many proverbs are either narrowly regional or archaic. I bet that if any of us were to read a dictionary of English proverbs we wouldn't know the majority, but would understand them.

I just found it in Wikiproverbs.
They translated it into Spanish, and the Spanish proverb sounds beautiful and wise: "Palabras y plumas el viento lleva."(unless it's written of course. then it becomes libel)
