Both ‘por el contrario’ and ‘al contario’ mean ‘on the contrary’ or ‘to the contrary’. Is there a difference in meaning with ‘por lo contrario’ used above? Could ‘por lo contrario’ mean ‘on the other hand’? Many thanks in advance. |

"Por el contrario" = "por lo contrario"
It's just a regional or idiosyncratic use of the pronoun. Both are an opposition to what should be expected, like "on the contrary"/"to the contrary".
