Native Language: I speak English and I'm learning Spanish

I'm wondering exactly what gentilicio means. The dictioanry here translates it as national, gentile, tribal & hereditary. But how & when exactly is it used. I've never heard it before. If anyone can help out that would be great. Also , does it come from the word gente?
