I take that "losa" is used here as,
3 Se usa como nombre calificativo o término de comparación, aplicado a una cosa que constituye una *pesadumbre o que impide estar animado o contento. (I always heard before "la noticia me cayó como un jarro de agua fría..." but I guess that one is more like a "shock", while the "brick" or "losa" is something that depress you heavily...) ?
