Pedazo

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for October 23, 2008

pedazo - masculine noun (el) - piece. Look up pedazo in the dictionary

Sólo comí un pedazo de pan y tomé un vaso de agua en todo el día.
I only ate a piece of bread and drank a glass of water all day long.

Pedazo sometimes has negative implications.
Ese coche es un pedazo. Ayer tuve problemas con las bujias, y hoy
las llantas.
Pedazo can mean . Piece of --(fill in the blanks).

Hi Poli,
In sp the meaning is the opposite.

Un pedazo de coche=a really good car

Synonyms: trozo, cacho.

Sorry, crotalito, but it's true.

Un buen carro= sounds very informal here but possible

Un pedazo de coche=an excellent car

Really, just to help, you can find pedazo used with any noun:

Un pedazo de casa=a great house
Un pedazo de hombre=a real man

It must be one of those idiosyncrasies where the meaning is opposite of the literal meaning of the word, such as saying something is "baaaaaad" here in the US. Depending on the context and your tone of voice, it means something is really nice.
