Hacía tiempo

Hacía tiempo

I'd like to know the alternatives that there are to say "hacía tiempo que...". For instance, inn this sentence:

Hacía meses que quería saber....

my book says: I had been wanting for months...

But I think that there must be another ways of saying the same (as literally as possible, please).

(Yo) he estado queriendo por meses...

No good, sorry. (Grammatically possible, but arguably different meaning depending on context.)
