Encontré la palabra como "telephone call" pero también como mensaje telefonico.

El DRAE parece permitir cualquiera comunicación por medios electrónicos a larga distancia.

en este caso, tomando como referencia "los cuentos completos", se refiere a llamadas talefónicas. Una página antes dice "EL uso metódico del teléfono..." por lo tanto utilizaba el teléfono, daba igual si es para hablar directamente o para mandar mensajes.
"las rodilleras, el polvo,la barba, los fatigosos telefonemas "--> se refiere a las continuas llamadas, o mensajes dejados por teléfono para tenerlos informados. Como en ambos casos hay que realizar llamadas, tómalo como "las fatigosas llamadas telfónicas"
