All good things

How would you translate the expression 'all good things', as in: all good things come from the lord' (sorry, I could only come up with a religious context).

My guess would be either 'todo el bueno' or 'todos los buenos'.

Peter

sosia has a spectacular aura aboutsosia has a spectacular aura about
"todo lo bueno"/todas las cosas buenas"
all good things come from the lord'--> todas las cosas buenas las da el Señor
all good things are finished--> todo lo bueno se acabó
I do the bad and he takes all the good things --> Yo hago lo malo y el hace todo lo bueno/ y el se queda con todas las cosas buenas

saludos

Thanks a lot! Could you possibly explain why you use 'lo' instead of 'el' ? Is it a shortening of 'all that is good' or something?

Peter

"Lo" is a neuter pronoun and when it goes with an adjective, it is used to sustantivate the adjective. So

Lo bueno = esas/estas/las cosas buenas.

Lo = eso, esa(s) cosa(s).

Interesante. Yo habría dicho "toda cosa buena".

Puedes decirlo, pero es más habitual sustantivar el adjetivo:

Toda cosa buena (o todas las cosas buenas) = lo bueno
Toda cosa mala = lo malo
Toda cosa interesante = lo interesante
Toda cosa bella = lo bello
etc.

Remember "lo" is also plural:

Revisó uno por uno los ladrillos y sólo se quedó con los buenos
Revisó una por una las baldosas y sólo se quedó con las buenas
Revisó uno por uno los ladrillos y las baldosas y sólo se quedó con lo bueno.
