Could I say:

Political consequences were felt most strongly in the south and east of Britain...

instead of:

(id.) in southern and eastern of Britain :?:

Thanks. :)

(id.) in southern and eastern of Britain I've just realized that this is anyway grammatically incorrect. Not only that, but I suspect that Southern and Eastern should have uppercase initials.

And you need to rest. More butter. :rose::rose:

I don't think the capitals are required. (And standing alone, Southern makes me think you're talking about railways).

American English thoughts:

"southern" is an adjective, so you would need a noun afterwards such as "the southern parts of Britain"

South and East are correct for your sentence.

I was looking at the "of" from his original sentence.

But she already said she had no idea why it was there. Time to move on. :)
