"Compromiso" used in a soccer telecast

Hi!
I'm a Canadian football/soccer fan who speaks little Spanish. I've been watching the under-20 World Cup on TeleLatino (TLN) and noticed that the announcers use the word "compromiso" very frequently during the match. I've looked up the definition of the word (commitment, engagement etc.) but none of the definitions seem to support the frequency of use. Is there another definition for compromiso that relates to football that I am missing?

It's slightly arbitrary use of the word "compromiso". It's used to describe the attitude of players that actually seem to want to win a match or do their part to make a good team. :)
Players and coaches are supposed to be committed to succeed as a team.

The under-20 World Cup is currently taking place in Colombia. My hometown is one of the "sedes" (word in English? maybe "venue"?)

Actually, in Colombia --I have no idea if it happens in any other countries--, "compromiso" is a colloquial regional synonym for "match" or "game"which is frequently used. It's probably a term usurped by sport commentators which has become common place. :)

You said "engagement", and that's what it is, a fight, a match.
