I'm know mediodía is noon, but also south?.
I found very limited references to the south usage on line. How/when would it be used as south instead of sur?
Thanks, Bob Ritter, Pensacola, FL. USA

My dictionary gives
mediodía masculino
A
1 (las doce de la mañana) midday, noon; a mediodía or al mediodía at midday
2 (la hora de comer) lunch time
B (Geografía) south; el mediodía francés the French Midi

"Mediodía" is an ancient and now almost exclusively literary option to say "sud" or "sur". The reason is south being where the sun is pointing at noon in the Northern Hemisphere, north of Tropic of Cancer.
