Hola de nuevo:

Esta vez me extraña un poco el uso de "al entender (que)" en el ejemplo más abajo:

Los médicos le dan una droga experimental al paciente de cáncer. Lo hacen al entender que podría ser su única opción para sobrevivir.¿Puede que "al entender que" quiera decir aquí "based on their view that" o "as they regard"?

"entender" doesn't mean "understand" there but something like "getting a conclusion by inference or deduction" with a touch of doing so after reflecting on that quite a lot ("discurrir") and by having a deep sensibility or learned skills to do that. An intellectual authority "entiende" that way.
