I was thinking "¿Se lo hace loco?" but not sure. I'm writing an essay about Don Quijote and I ask that rhetorical question towards the beginning.

The subject pronoun 'it' is not translated into Spanish. 'Drive/Make someone crazy' is 'volver loco a alguien (http://www.tomisimo.org/idioms/es/volver-loco-a-alguien-3286.html)'.

¿Lo vuelve loco? = Does it drive him crazy?

I'm aware of that, but I'm trying to make it sound more rhetorical. The way you wrote it is what I had originally, but I was told that way is a direct question. Since you're a native English speaker it might help if I give some examples of what I am trying to say -

"Does his infidelity mean he's a bad candidate for President?, well, that's something you have to decide for yourself, to me, it really doesn't matter at all".

or perhaps

"Can we simply judge people based on their gender?"

I hope that makes more sense. What I'm trying to say is "Does it, as in his actions in the book, make him (cause him to be) crazy"?

In that case "lo hace un loco?" "lo convierte en un loco?"

I'm aware of that, but I'm trying to make it sound more rhetorical. It doesn't sound at all rhetorical to me in English.

I agree with Perikles. A rhetorical question would need no answer, but I assume you're answering it in your essay, so the question, as you have it in English, is what Rusty and Chileno proposed. Or, "¿Lo hace ser un loco?" (Does it make him be a crazy person?)

Just a note: "¿Se lo hace loco?" makes no sense in Spanish.
In any case, "¿Se lo hace un loco?" but this means "does a crazy man do it to himself?"

yada, yada ... but, does it make him crazy? = bla, bla ... pero ¿lo convierte esto en un loco? (or "¿lo convierte esto en loco?")
