Sequel/prequel

I assume sequel is sequela. Is that the best word in Spanish for sequel? How about prequel?

secuela.

And secuela is a consequence, mainly something left as a result of illness or an accident: "El accidente fue terrible pero no dejó secuelas graves, sólo un ligera debilidad en el brazo izquierdo".

Not surprisingly, some people easy to colonize started to use "secuela" instead of "continuación" regarding to films or literary works that involve following a narrative line. I suppose they'd invent "precuela" to replace the usual "historia previa" or "antecedente" as Hollywood is very seductive and it invites to eat pop corn instead of thinking.

I suspected that sequel and secuela were not good cognates. Prequel is of course a late 20th century word created because incredibly there was no really good word in the English language that fit its discription. It's incredible that in the hundreds of years of modern English prequel
was born just a few decades ago. They must have used antecedent earlier, but to me its meaning is less clear
