In Spain if our car is in trouble we take it to the "garaje" or to the " taller " to get fixed, how do we say that in English? I know we can say Garage, but the other day I heard another word and I forgot it.

In the U.S. the commonly used generic names for a business, especially a small business, that provides general automobile service and repair are "garage", "repair shop" and "mechanic".

"repair shop" or "mechanic" - mechanic refers to the person, but is the general term I hear used around here.
"I have to take my car to a/the/my mechanic"

Sometimes they just use...."auto shop" which implies repair shop.
Why?....I don't know.
