Esto (neuter), used when you're talking about an idea or about something of unknown gender. ¿Qué es esto? (What is this?) -Este es un cuaderno. (This is a notebook.) -Esta es una falda. (This is a dress.)

Este (masculine), used when the object you're talking about is of masculine gender.
Esta (feminine), used when the object is of feminine gender.
