Apart from that, I heard a different name, the guy was American, they were shorts.

Sometimes people who work in restaurant kitchesn wear black and white checked trausers. Plaid would not be the best term for the pattern on those pants.

How about "tartan"?Not really. Tartan is sometimes checkered, but refers specifically to patterns on Scottish kilts and the like.
