Hello!
What's the appropriate translation of "back up number" if the subject is phone number for contact?
Thank you!

I think 'un número de teléfono alternativo (de contacto)' would work in most cases. You could always add, "por si no le localizamos en el principal," to communicate the purpose of the back-up number. Alternatively, you might also want to add, "en caso de emergencia." This, I think, would get the message across.

On a more technical note, I just found 'un número de teléfono de respaldo', but this might not be universally understood.

I agree with Rusty: "un número de respaldo" would sound weird to me.

However, the common expression I've heard for a second telephone number is "número de teléfono adicional" (in writing) and "¿tiene otro número de teléfono donde lo podamos contactar?" (when spoken). :)

Hi!
I think that "un número de teléfono alternativo" is good, because is almost the same as in portuguese "um número de telefone alternativo". it's nice, isn't?
Gracias y un abrazo! (obrigada e um abraço!)
