Is it correct using "composed by"? The sentence is: Units composed by ranks.

I think it must be "composed of".

Yes, I'd say 'arranged by rank' or 'composed of ranks' but you're right 'composed by ranks' wouldn't work. :)

Would you say that "arranged by" and "composed of" are synoniymous? That's important for me. Thank you.

No, both phrases could work but they do really have a slightly different meaning, 'arranged by means that the units are put in a certain order by rank, 'composed of' means that the units are made up of different ranks, different ranks are what make a unit.

For some reason 'arranged by' seems more natural to me but I guess either could work depending on the rest of the context.
