More specifically, only for nurses,

Nursing students have ward experience in the hospital twice a week.

It's something different in the USA

In the medical field or in other fields? In the medical field, internship in for advanced students who gain hands-on experience in treating patients under the supervision of a medical doctor.

In other fields it means unpaid work in order to gain experience in any given field.
