I know go in the water is fine. Why don,t we use go into the water? When do we use one or the other?

I know go in the water is fine. Why don,t we use go into the water? When do we use one or the other? That started a little argument. My wife claims 'go in the water' is fine. I say it is colloquial and low register. She didn't like that :D. I claim 'into' is correct and better, she claims it's acceptable as an alternative, but less common.
So there you are. :D

"There", refers to the water... or the soup? :D

Thank you. That's what my teachers taught me. :D

Go into the water is clear and unambiguous. Go in the water may under some circumstances mean urinate or defecate in the water:lol: Go into the water would never mean that.
