What language would you learn and why? I'd like to use my Spanish knowledge and learn Portuguese.
Saludos.

Just your native language skills learned throughout your life will do, and it does help you know another language. More skills are added when you already had to go through a second language acquiring skills, then the third, fourth etc should be easier.

Same here, Liquinn3 but I confess to have given up after only a short trial period. If only I hadn't heard somewhere that Portuguese is easier to learn when one has had no exposure to Spanish first! Sorry to say, that discouraged me.
Nevertheless, don't let my experience discourage you!

Portuguese sounds like Spanish with a Portuguese accent to me.
If you speak fluent Spanish then Portuguese is relativamente facil. 80% the same.
Now here's what happened to me: I was driving 40 miles to work so I would listen to my Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and French language courses. One time I was listening to Portuguese and not understanding too well. Then I listened to the French course and couldn't understand almost anything. After that I switched back to the Portuguese and was amased at all I could understand. Maybe it's just psychological but try it. It works for me every time. Also I do have an advantage for learning Portuguese because I'm very familiar with Cuban Spanish which has a lot in common with Portuguese. That along with the fact that I speak Italian and French also.
