Hi,
What is the spanish equivalent for the "cog-rail".
Also I want to translate the phrase "winding it's way up the hill side".
"Enrollando su camino ...." - I am stuck.

I don't think there is a specific word,so I would simply say: tren, or tranvía. The sentence would be: subiendo por la ladera de la colina, subiendo por la colina.

First of all, I wasn't 100% sure what you meant by cog rail. A cog railway is a railway in the mountains or going up a hill. It has cogs and the locomotive has a cogwheel, thus ensuring traction.
Maybe you can partially explain what it is: tranvía dentada
tranvía con dientes
tren con rueda dentada
tren de montaña con rueda dentada
un tren cog railway con rueda dentada para subir la pendiente
I don't know if any of those sound good in Spanish :)
winding it's way up the hill side
El tren culebreaba de lado a lado mientras subía la colina/pendiente/ladera. :?:

You say trAnvía, David.
Your translation sounds a bit weird, but I cannot come with anything better that conveys the same idea as wind up.

Is there a word for switchbacks in Spanish? This is when a road or trail goes back and forth from one side to the other to climb a hill, so that the road isn't so steep.

It seems the best translation is camino o carretera en zigzag. At least that's what I found, not that I've ever heard it myself.

Hmmm perhaps you could use zigzag de alguna forma para decir que the train was winding up the hill. :)

Hmmm perhaps you could use zigzag de alguna forma para decir que the train was winding up the hill. :)There exists the verb zigzaguear. I don't know if it's suitable for what you mean.
