In english "We learnt from the receptionist...." which means "we came to know from the receptionist that.....".

In spanish what is the equivalent for "learnt from.."

I cannot understand what you mean by receptionist here. Does it matter the profession of whom you learn from? Can you learn from a cooker, a fireman, a gardener...?

If not, as I suposse, I would say: nos dijo el recepcionista que es mejor ir a la playa con la marea baja.

A litteral translation wouldn't work on this context.

The verb learn is usually aprender, but in this case I would use something like "the receptionist told us..." We learned from the receptionist ...
Nos dijo el/la recepcionista que ... (the receptionist told us that ...)
